IT has been a busy week at Okehampton Rugby Club, despite the unfortunate cancellation of Saturday's game against Tavistock due to a waterlogged pitch.

The club is busy celebrating it's 125th anniversary this season and the calendar is packed full of events and occasions to celebrate this special historic milestone.

This week saw the club's initial 'first match night' on Thursday evening, where around a hundred guests enjoyed a fantastic evening in the excellent setting of the recently refurbished clubhouse.

A superb three course meal cooked by chef David Wills set the tone and the assembled guest speakers did a marvellous job before the star turn commenced. Former Bath, England and British Lions prop, Gareth Chilcott had the crowd in stitches as his blend of rugby nostalgia and hilarious anecdotes provided the perfect end to a great night.

Throughout the evening local magician David Merlin provided tableside magic exhibitions of the highest order and in doing so helped to raise a substantial amount of money for charity. The last action of the evening saw an auction hosted by the inimitable Mr Chilcott and this raised welcome funds for the rugby club itself.

With the club enjoying success on the field at all levels, Saturday saw the annual sponsors' lunch at the clubhouse. Another excellent spread was enjoyed by all, who unfortunately had no live rugby to see but were able to enjoy the large screen entertainment from the latest round of Six Nation matches.

On April 10 sees the 125th anniversary player's reunion at the club, a light buffet lunch will be provided and tickets are available for only £5. All players past and present are invited to attend, catch up with old friends whilst taking in the last home first XV game of the season to round off this special season in style.
