A WEST Devon man will be rubbing shoulders with sporting legends Sir Stirling Moss and former F1 star Gerhard Berger next week, when he races his unique car at the biggest historic motor racing event in the world. Stephen Bradstone, from Bradford near Milton Abbot, is competing in the Goodwood Revival ? an event which will feature a host of personalities like Rowan Atkinson, broadcaster Tif Needell and ITV F1 pundit Tony Jardine in addition to former champions including Sir Jackie Stewart. Stephen will be driving his 1954 Connaught ALSR in the Freddie March Memorial Trophy Race ? an event for cars in the spirit of the Goodwood Nine-Hour races between 1952-55. His car, driven by Les Leston and Archie Scott Brown, actually won its class in the race in 1955. Stephen said: ?I went to the Goodwood Revival last year and it?s a brilliant event ? it?s a long way to go but it?s really a worthwhile trip.? Steven bought his 1954 Connaught a couple of years ago ? he has three historic racing cars in total and is passionate about his hobby. ?I bought this one because of its history ? it had been driven by Stirling Moss, among others. The car is the only one of its type ? it?s unique,? he said. Historic cars like Stephen?s Connaught all have detailed provenances to prevent fraud ? in many cases they are unique cars and are worth ?an awful lot of money?, said Stephen, who farms at Bradstone and owns a transport company in the Midlands. ?My car actually raced at Davidstow in Cornwall when there was a race track there,? he said. ?These cars have to have paperwork, a bit like a passport. It?s also important to keep everything ? anything you take off to replace on a car like that you have to keep, to prove its provenance.? The Goodwood Revival recreates the romance of motor racing as it used to be. Not only do historic cars from all over the world race at the restored circuit, described as the ?spiritual home of British racing?, bands play 1950s music, food outlets sell fish and chips wrapped in 50s-style newspaper, competitors and staff dress in period clothing and the skies are home to flights by Spitfires, Mustangs and other world war two aircraft. Stephen said: ?The drivers and mechanics all dress up, we go along and pretend to be racing drivers ? it?s a wonderful event, you just keep your fingers crossed for fine weather. ?You get people there from all over the world and it?s actually fascinating. You get to know the names of the competitors, what you don?t know is one is the Diesel Jeans magnate, another chap owns Tate & Lyle sugar, another owns Becks beer. But once we?re on the race track, we?re all just little kids again.? The Goodwood Revival takes place just outside Chichester in West Sussex between September 16 and 18.
