AN appeal was this week issued to anyone in the Tavistock area who would like to do their bit to launch what could the start of a glittering musical career.
Young singer/songwriter Rory Gilmore, 17, is staging the local launch of his new three-track EP demo CD, 'Fairy Lights' — and is appealing to anyone who can loan some lights to make the occasion appropriately glittering.
Organisers of the event, to be held in Tavistock's Brown's Hotel on Thursday November 6, say they will untangle any loaned sets of lights, test the bulbs and fuses and give them a thorough pre-Christmas check up in return for their loan.
'Fairy Lights' features three songs, written by Tavistock College student Rory, which demonstrate his versatility and individuality.
Long-term playing partner and local musician Mike Morgan, who is already attracting interest from producers, plays drums on the tracks.
The EP CD will be circulated to record companies and promoters following its launch at a live event entitled 'A Plague On Both Your Houses' in London tomorrow (Friday).
The event takes place at a secret, 700-capacity venue on the South Bank, and offers a strong bill of up and coming artists from around the country.
It is being promoted by a celebrity feature-writer from the Daily Star, and a strong media turn-out is anticipated.
Rory said: 'The London date is a major opportunity for me. I'm very excited about it, but I'm also being realistic.
'Something may come of it: I might secure additional bookings up there, and there's the possibility of meeting with people who can help further my career.
'At the same time, if it just turns out to be a fun event to take part in, I'll be more than happy to simply have the experience, and to learn from it.'
The invitation-only Tavistock launch will be attended by many of those who have been supportive of Rory, and has been sponsored by Phil Biggin and Helena King of Browns.
Phil said: 'Rory's played here frequently, and we think he's got enormous talent and potential. We're delighted to be presenting the evening.'
Anyone who provides any of those precious fairy lights for the night will also be invited, in return for helping to turn it into a truly glittering event .
