PIXON Lane in Tavistock will re-open today (Thursday) following structural repairs to the old railway bridge which police believe was hit by a large vehicle.

One of the ringstones was dislodged and several others towards the keystone have been in danger of collapsing. It resulted from an incident on or before September 19 which police suspect involved some sort of articulated lorry or low loader with machinery on the back.

A member of the public reported the matter to the police and the road was closed immediately by Devon Council Council.

Network Rail, which owns the bridge, has spent the last week carrying out the repairs.

A spokesperson for the county council said there was a height restriction on the bridge but someone had clearly ignored that.

'As far as I am aware it has not happened before,' she said.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the bridge being damaged.
