A NEW programme of Tavistock Walk and Talk events has just been published — and everyone is invited.
The Walk and Talk scheme celebrates its first anniversary in September and was recently awarded a certificate of accreditation as part of the Natural England Walking the Way to Health Initiative.
The scheme started in response to Tavistock residents who asked if healthy walks could be organised.
The first walk attracted just over 20 people. Now around 80 people take part in the regular Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday walks and the scheme boasts a membership of around 150 walkers.
The walks would not be possible if it was not for the dedicated support of a team of volunteers who lead and plan them every week.
Partnership working between West Devon Borough Council, Natural England and the 5x30 Health Promotion Project has enabled the project to flourish. Travelwise has provided funding towards the project.
The short walks are held every Tuesday at 10.30am at the Wharf in Tavistock for people who do little or no physical activity or people restricted by mobility problems.
The Thursday weekly walks are slightly longer and are suitable for people who already do a certain amount of physical activity and are able to cope with hills. They meet at the Wharf at 10am.
Two Sunday walks are planned for August 31 and September 28, meeting at the Wharf at 2pm to car share to different locations. New walkers are welcomed throughout the year.
More walk leaders are needed. If you would like to train as a 'Walking the Way to Health' Volunteer Walk Leader contact the scheme co-ordinator, Hannah Colston on 07990 804756 or 01822 813628.
