A CAMPAIGN to oppose the creation of an out-of- town superstore on a greenfield site just outside Tavistock is stepping up a gear, with the creation of a new internet 'blog'. Supermarket giant Sainsbury's, which submitted and then withdrew a planning application for a store on land at Brook is expected to re-submit a new application soon. The Brook Campaign group comprises residents who believe the proposed out-of-town superstore would do irreparable damage to Tavistock's unique character and vibrant retail environment, and is backed by the town's chamber of commerce. Chamber chairman Nigel Eadie said the blog would be an easy way for residents to have their say about a new supermarket in Tavistock. He said the Brook Campaign was gearing up to spread its message wider over the coming months to engage more and more businesses, residents and land-owners in the debate. He said: 'Up-to-the minute information is being listed on the Campaign blog tavistockvoice.wordpress.com and a firm of local independent feedback consultants have set up a voicemail line for people who are passionate about this issue — for and against — to have their say, when and where it suits them. Mr Eadie said people with a point to make should call 01822 678376, and leave a voicemail message. Views will be collated and published as a regular audio podcast that people can listen to via the Campaign blog. Mr Eadie said: 'It's no use waiting for Sainsbury's to put in a planning application and then getting all hot around the collar. 'By then, it is too late. Sainsbury's will almost certainly submit their planning application again very soon — but the real way of stopping them developing this site is to make sure that the land is designated and maintained as 'employment' usage and nothing else.' At a Brook Campaign meeting last Wednesday, detailed guidelines were distributed on how to respond in order to prevent key policy changes happening now that would give a green light to future Sainsbury's planning applications. The deadline for submitting feedback to West Devon Borough Council on its core strategy local development plan is noon on March 14. Former West Devon chief planning officer Stephen Gill has been taken on as the Brook Campaign's independent planning consultant, bringing invaluable experience and insight to the process of ensuring the town's objections are voiced to maximum effect. Mr Eadie said: 'For many people involved with the Brook Campaign, the greatest benefit has been learning how the planning and consultation process actually works and becoming empowered to play a role in shaping the future of their town as a result.
