THE Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust is running a series of volunteer events for families and local groups to help with fir tree removal and vegetation removal from around hut circles and ancient pounds on Bellever, near Postbridge on Dartmoor.

The charity, which was created to preserve the traditional type of Dartmoor pony, say the events will suit children and adults of all abilities — outdoor clothing can be provided and they promise participants will have loads of fun, as well as helping to preserve the Moor.

Clare Stanton, trust spokesperson, said: 'The Dartmoor pony on Dartmoor is at real risk of being lost due to market forces and the DPHT's role is to help preserve the pony for future generations. And without the grazing style of the ponies, Dartmoor's ecology and the overall environment is being affected.'

'This will be a perfect opportunity to be really active and get out and about and learn about Dartmoor, the ponies, archaeology, flora and fauna on Bellever, whilst carrying out important conservation work to manage this very special site.'

It is suitable for families, school groups, special interest groups, local history, conservation and community groups — everyone who loves spending some time out of doors, as well as learning a lot and enjoying meeting new people.

Dates available are: Wednesday, February 1; Saturday, Februrary 18 and Thursday, March 8.
