THE population of West Devon has increased by just over six per cent in ten years, according to figures revealed by the 2001 census announced this week.

Residents in the borough, which has the smallest population in Devon, increased from 45,895 in 1991 to 48,808 in 2001 ? an increase of 6.3%.

The largest increase in Devon was in Exeter where population rose by 13.2%.

The smallest rise of 3.2% was in North Devon.

The results of the census reinforce the need to provide cheaper homes, according to Devon County Council.

Council leader Brian Greenslade said that a fresh look was needed to help local people who were priced out of the property market.

The council is organising a round-table meeting in Exeter next month, to which district council representatives, housing association and developers will be invited.

Cllr Greenslade said: ?Meeting the housing needs of local people and in particular, first time buyers and those on low incomes, is a source of deep concern.?

Cllr Greenslade said the good news revealed by the census was that the increase in Devon?s population appeared to be employment led and younger people and families were being attracted to the area.

He said: ?A round table will give all concerned the opportunity to get together to share local experience and find ways in which we might move forwards on this issue.?

The meeting will be held on November 8.
