A TAVISTOCK group which helps people recovering from mental health problems is having a charity table top sale in Tavistock Pannier Market this Saturday and a sponsored walk on June 22 to raise money for a photographic exhibition in October. The exhibition is the brainchild of local amateur photographer Claire Garrod-Pullar, who used her photographic skill combined with her sense of humour to help her own recovery from mental ill health. Her enthusiasm and keen awareness of the stigma many people with mental illness problems can experience every day has inspired others in the Tavistock Rethink Group to work together to organise the event. The group, known as SURF — the Service Users Recovery Forum — wants to show the wealth of talent which exists locally within those who have direct experience of the illness. They also want to reach out to people who may be experiencing despair and hopelessness, to encourage them with positive recovery stories and opportunities for them to discover and display their talents. All the photographs will be for sale, as will a booklet of recovery stories. Further information is available from Maureen Parr at Rethink on 01822 610946.
