Tamar Evening League Whitchurch Wayfareres v Callington WHITCHURCH produced a fine team performance to beat Callington, in the Tamar Evening league. Whitchurch lost the toss and were asked to field. The Callington openers started well, hitting the ball hard and were on 40 for no wicket off 5 overs. However once the opening stand was broken, the Whitchurch bowlers got their tails up and started bowling good line and length, but the Callington middle order A Shorten (20), Bradbeer (28 not out) and Hatch (19) kept the score ticking over until Hatch was superbly run out by Nigel Barriball which typified the whole Whitchurch fielding performance. The pick of the Whitchurch bowlers were Spike Macdougall (2 for 31) and Adam Bridgewater (1 for 20) off their 5 over spells. Callington finishing on 139 for 5 from their 20 overs. The Whitchurch openers started tentatively facing the bowling of J Shorten (0 for 20), but were still picking up the runs to keep the score ticking over and at the half way stage Whitchurch were on 66 for 1, with Ashley Woodrow the only casualty to fall for 13. With wickets in hand the Whitchurch batsman could play their shots, but then D Farris came into the attack and bowled a great spell to rip the heart out of the Whitchurch middle order finishing on 4 for 22. With that spell finished Matt Witcher came to the crease to join Ian Gray, with the run rate increasing. The 18th over changed the match completely with Witcher hitting 22 from it, including two huge sixes. Gray was finally run out in the 19th over for a fine knock of 54, including six fours and one six. With Whitchurch needing five runs off the last over, everyone thought it was going to go to the wire, but Witcher hit a first ball for a mighty six to win the game. Witcher finished on 38 from only sixteen balls including three sixes and four fours. Both teams played the game hard but in the right spirit.
