TWO West Devon young people were presented with awards for their integrity, talents and service to the community in a special ceremony at County Hall, Exeter recently. Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards were presented to 39 young people by the Lord Lieutenant of Devon Eric Dancer. Andrew Moppett of Belstone and Joe Scott of North Tawton both undertook their awards with Okehampton College. Andrew undertook an expedition and residential at a children?s camp in Kenya, studied the environment, car maintenance, engineering and table tennis to gain his award. For his award, Joe helped with the Air Training Corps, learned ceremonial drill, undertook Nordic skiing, helped street children in Kenya and climbed Mt Kenya. As the largest operating authority in the country, Devon Youth Service took the lead in organising the presentation. The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a personal development programme undertaken as part of leisure-time activities. It challenges all young people between the ages of 14-25 to serve others, acquire new skills, experience adventure and make new friends of all ages. Those taking part can develop existing interests or try something new. The scheme is not competitive and anyone with the necessary perseverance can gain an award by choosing activities which suit their particular interests and talents.
