DOGS are to be allowed in the Charter Hall, but market traders are not . . . Okehampton town councillors established a new policy for use of the Charter Hall at a special meeting held on Tuesday night. Members agreed to a request from Okehampton and District Canine Society to hold weekly dog training classes in the hall. But the council voted against a similar request to hire the hall for market stalls on available days. Both groups currently use the market hall but have been considering possible alternative venues since the council announced in December it was in negotiations with a private company to convert the hall into a three-screen cinema. Supporters of Okehampton Auctions attended the meeting but were disappointed at the scale of fees and charges the council adopted. Steve Wreford, of Okehampton Auctions, said the charge of more than £425 to hire the hall for the monthly sale was only slightly less than the present fee, despite the Charter Hall only being able to accommodate a sale on a smaller scale. Mr Wreford said in light of the new charges, he would have to ?seriously consider relocation?.
