U12s Ocean league Tavistock Girls 1 Staddiscombe 0 WITH both teams forced to play a straight seven and no subs this match was decided by fitness. Staddiscombe fielded a big strong seven and Tavistock started to struggle in meeting the ball. It took stand-in keeper Becky Gordon to make some terrific saves to keep Tavistock in the game. The defence of Hammond, Shaw and Eales worked hard to keep the fast Staddiscombe forwards at bay and Gale, Rose and Glasspoole worked the ball upfield. Gale?s relentless runs saw Rose break through but saw her shot saved by the keeper. Eales used her speed to mark the Staddiscombe strikers and had her best game to date. Despite Shaw and Hammond pushing up to assist the midfield the goal would not come. Corners were won but the keeper saved each shot and her long kicks were met by fast strikers. The second half saw Tavistock struggling again and Gordon coolly saved, as well as dealing with a number of risky pass backs. Play went from end to end with Eales and Hammond pushing up from the back. Glasspoole sent in a fine cross met by Rose who knocked the ball into the area and a rebound found the sure foot of Shaw who smashed the ball into the net. With 5 minutes to go Tavistock were on the defensive and managed to hold on till the final whistle. Player of the match went to Amy Gale.
