DESPITE turbulent local weather and fears the championships would be cancelled, the recent Cornish pilot gig mixed championships at St Ives had good sunny conditions. Tamar and Tavy gig club entered two mixed rowing teams. Excellent results were achieved in the first heat. The heavier boat with Steve Jackson, Nicky Sellers, Sam Adlam, Julie Williams, Richard Murrin and Ian Paige coxed by John Hillson gained 3rd place in their heat qualifying for the next round, in which they also came third. They gave the leading boats a hard chase and were beaten only by World Champions Caradon and the experienced Fowey Club. The lighter boat with Helen Smith, Helen Lloyd, Helen Dickinson, Rob Dawe, Holger Stoeker and Mathew Pinney coxed by Carolyn Dawe overlapped the third boat on the finish line to take fourth place in their heat and also qualified for the next round. Unfortunately during the next round the lighter team struggled with gear failure in the borrowed gig. Despite this, Tamar and Tavy are delighted with such good results particularly as they are less experienced on the open sea and in mixed formations.
