A ROCK band formed at Okehampton College recently competed in a regional competition for young musicians. Genuine Imitation, from Okehampton, were one of five bands competing in the Gigging-It-To-Win-It Rock Competition at the Plough Arts Centre in Great Torrington on Saturday, June 18. The bands were drawn from as far away as Totnes and Bude, as well as two groups from the Barnstaple area. Each performed two covers and two songs of their own composition. Every band that took part rose to the challenge and put in outstanding performances, but the panel of judges, made up of three local professional musicians chose Totnes band a.sa.p.as overall winners. Organisers are advising other young bands to get practising in preparation for an even bigger and better event next year, due to take place on Friday, February 24. By bringing the contest forward they hope to avoid any complications with GCSEs.
