TAVISTOCK town centre will be full of the sound of tooting whistles and rumbling wheels early next month, as the annual steam fair rolls into town. Tavistock Steam Fair, staged by the Robey Trust, will take place on Sunday June 1 and will take over The Wharf and Bedford car parks. Bedford car park will be the setting for the steam engines, both full sized and miniature versions, plus collections of classic and vintage cars, commercial and military vehicles and buses, barn engines and vintage tractors. It is hoped an enlarged military vehicle display will be a feature of this year's fair. The Collectors' Exhibition will take place in The Wharf. This includes a large garden railway layout and collections of all sorts of interesting and unusual items. It is also hoped to have steam boats on the canal. The Frank Roffey Tractor Trail will start and finish at the steam fair — a colourful line of 20 to 30 restored tractors will leave at 11am and return at 2pm, having visited Abbotsfield Nursing Home, Kelly College and The Trout and Tipple public house. There will be steam engine rides and a miniature steam train to take a trip in, and for the younger visitors, a selection of roundabouts. The nostalgic atmosphere will be completed by a fairground organ. Bedford Car Park will be closed from midnight on Saturday May 31 until 8pm on June 2. Riverside, Abbey Rise and the Guildhall car parks in Tavistock will be open as usual. The steam fair will be officially opened at noon by the mayor of Tavistock and mayor of West Devon, although the event will be open to the public from 10am. Pedestrian access will be from the town end of Bedford Car Park and by Meadowlands pool. Canal Road will be open to exhibitors only. Entrance is £2.50 adults, under 16s accompanied by an adult free. Unaccompanied U16s £2.50.
