WEST Devon?s Mayor got no special favours from fellow local resident Noel Edmonds when she appeared last week on a new Channel 4 daytime game show he is hosting. Cllr Jayne Hill walked away with one of the lowest cash sums to date on Deal or No Deal, but says she still enjoyed the experience. The game begins with the player choosing one of 22 sealed boxes. No-one knows what is contained within ? it could be up to a quarter of a million pounds or it could merely be small change. One by one the player opens all the other boxes, gradually gaining a better idea what prize may be in their own sealed box. To increase the tension, the player receives telephone calls from the ?Banker? who offers to buy the mystery box from the player for varying amounts. Jayne had chosen a £5 box and unfortunately, the high value boxes were among the first one?s she eliminated. She eventually took a banker?s deal of £1,000, having earlier turned down a deal for £4,000. Jayne said she had no regrets about turning down the bigger deal. ?I?m not a gambler by nature. I came with nothing and I had a fantastic week, so I decided to go for it. ?I am quite philosophical about it all. It wasn?t mine to begin with it. It was just numbers on a board,? she said. Jayne said Noel chatted to her about living in Okehampton. ?He said ?I have to announce we both come from the most beautiful part of the country,? she explained. Jayne said when she was called up to the hot-seat she expected to be nervous, but was not. ?I was totally calm, I had thought the heart would pound but it didn?t.? Instead, she said the overwhelming feeling after a long day of filming in which two other episodes had been filmed earlier in the day was that of exhaustion! Jayne said the turning point in her game was when she got rid of a box against her better judgement. ?The box I shouldn?t have picked was number 18,? she said. ?My husband?s birthday is on that date, the man holding the box was called Rob and my husband is called Bob and that box had always been lucky in the previous games. My brain said ?Don?t pick number 18? but when I opened my mouth the words ?Number 18? came out, and that was the box with £75,000 in.? Jayne, a teacher in Plymouth said her pupils thought it was ?fabulous? to see their teacher on television. Jayne said she had enjoyed the experience of seeing behind the scenes at the making of a game show. Deal or No Deal is made in Bristol by the same production company that makes Big Brother and is shown on Channel 4 weekday afternoons at 4.15pm.
