Tavistock 35 Falmouth 23 TAVISTOCK needed this victory after losing their last two games. After the game coach Steve Rush, while happy with the win, said he wanted the team to play with the intensity they had shown in their cup defeat by Barnstaple in the previous game. Tavistock started slowly and were lucky not to concede a try from the first move of the game after Falmouth had run the ball back at them from the kick off. Some poor tackling allowed the Falmouth right wing to cross the line but luckily for Tavistock he dropped the ball when in the act of scoring. The same player also dropped a scoring pass minutes later with the line at his mercy. Tavistock gained some semblance of composure when the forwards started to take control. This allowed them to take the lead via a penalty goal from full back Josh Sutton. They then extended their lead after a Falmouth attack had broken down and Tavistock hacked the ball forward for winger James Radford to pick up the ball and claim a try. A similar effort came from home centre Duncan Law, who scored near the post; his effort was converted by Josh Sutton. Tavistock's forwards then turned the screw and after winning a line out close to the Falmouth line second row Andy Hunt was driven over to claim the try. Sutton again converted and added a penalty goal. The visitors got back into the game as half-time approached with a penalty goal to reduce theTavistock lead to 22 points. The second period started with all out attack from Falmouth and two tries in the first 15 minutes and a penalty goal reduced the Tavistock lead. The home side made the game safe in the final quarter when number eight Jake Phillips picked up from the base of an attacking five metre scrum and barged over the line to score a try, which was duly converted by Sutton. Falmouth came back with a further try but a third penalty goal from Sutton put the game beyond them. This coming Saturday Tavistock travel to Okehampton for the first leg of the West Devon derby in the Cornwall and Devon League. Kick off 2.30pm.
