SERVICES and facilities for young people in the Okehampton area are being highlighted as part of National Youth Work Week. This year?s theme for the week, which runs from November 1 to 7, is mental health and emotional well-being which supports the belief by youth workers throughout the country that every young person needs encouragement and support to achieve their personal goals and to maximise their potential. One of the projects provided by the Devon Youth Service is the newly refurbished Room 13 a ?one-stop shop for young people? where the long awaited youth café will open soon. Directions youth enquiry service already operates in the building, offering information, advice and support to anyone aged 12 to 25. The girls only group GAL for 13 to 19-year-olds meets on Mondays from 6.30pm to 8.30pm to boost self-confidence and make new friends, and in the Ockment Centre on Thursday lunchtimes, young parents and expectant mums are catered for and even provided with a free lunch. In North Tawton on Tuesdays the ?Yellow Submarine? youth café runs in the youth centre from 5.30pm to 7.30pm and offers any young people in school years seven, eight, nine and ten the opportunity to get together and have fun, enjoying arts, crafts, trips and barbecues.
