Tavistock v Axminster
IN cricket the toss of a coin can sometimes be the most influential part of a match. At Axminster this proved the case.
When Mark Richards won the toss for Axminster he had no hesitation in putting Tavistock in to bat, the conditions being ideal for bowling.
Only 23 runs had been scored off 10 overs when a mix up with the running between the wickets cost Andrew Kaitiff his wicket.
With the change in the attack Searle and McGahey pushed the score on to 74 before McGahey was caught in the covers for 37.
Searle (60) carried on to a fine half century, also being joined by his captain Dave Manning (71) who resumed his recent form by peppering the boundaries.
Newcomer Phil Ellwood chipped in with a valuable 19 and the final total of 238 seemed more than enough.
This is where it started to go wrong ? the Tavistock opening bowlers were undisciplined and Axminster scored freely, with 64 on the board after only 10 overs.
Tight spells from Andy Gauler (2-63) and Andy Kaitiff clawed it back and put the run rate up to 9 an over.
Now something had to give, eight wickets in hand but needing 9 an over. Unfortunately the Tavistock fielding dropped four catches. This allowed Jack Willow, 92 not out, to win the game in the 47th over by hitting a four and two sixes.
