BUCKLAND Monachorum Cricket Club and their junior team, The Bucks, hosted a tree planting ceremony at the Lady Seaton Sports Field last weekend.
They were joined by Celia Stevenson, great granddaughter of the original commercial propagator of the Bramley Seedling, who kindly donated four Bramley apple trees transported down specially from the Bramley home of Southwell, Notts.
Club President Mandy Robinson from the Drake Manor Inn donated local cider and apple juice for Celia to raise a toast to the trees, the club and the Queen in honour of her Jubilee. The newly planted trees were then wassailed by Dartmoor Border Morris to encourage them to produce a healthy crop.
This initial planting in the 'Jubilee Orchard' signifies another step towards an improved ground by the cricket club members, who are working hard to augment the area and fundraise for their new pavillion.
Club Chairman, Geoff Pollard, said: 'In ten years from now, we intend to be sat in our new pavillion eating Bramley apple pie — recommended by Celia - and drinking some BMCC Cider.'
The new season is getting ever closer and with three youth teams (Bucks, Drakes and Bees) to complement the senior side there will be two or three matches a week at the Lady Seaton Sports Field.
All are welcome to come along and support the teams.
