TAVISTOCK College this week celebrated a bumper bundle of excellent exam results, with the publication of students? GCSE successes.
College principal John Simes said the statistics were impressive, bucking this year?s national trend in which exam successes were slightly down.
At Tavistock College, the number of students gaining five A-C grade passes has risen two percent to 55% ? and there were particularly pleasing results at the top end of the success scale.
?The overall percentage of students getting one or more A* to C grades is 82.5%, which is about 16% above the national average.
? It means students are achieving right across the board, which is what you want to see,? said Mr Simes.
?Basically we have 99.66% of students achieving GCSE results, so I am delighted, it really is good news.?
Mr Simes said there were significantly better results in English, science and maths this year. Physics results were particularly good, with a very high number of students achieving A or A*.
Tavistock College is a language college and the head said results were strong across the range of languages, with ten students gaining A* grades in Japanese.
?The design technology department had some outstandingly high levels, with a lot of A*s and in statistics, 100% got a level C or above.
Mr Simes said: ?We are all absolutely delighted with these results. There are a lot of very happy people around, which is great.
?I used to dread coming to get exam results in years gone by, but I really enjoy it now. I think it?s because we are consistently successful and once you get to that point, it seems to create a culture and tradition of success.
?People are buzzing here today ? the students have worked very hard and I?m very pleased for them.?
Several youngsters had particularly outstanding successes in their GCSEs.
Kelly College students have produced the college?s best ever set of GCSE grades.
This year?s GCSE grades show almost 40% of Kelly?s pupils gaining passes at A and A* and a further improvement of the pass rate (A*-C) to 94%.
Headmaster Mark Steed said: ?This is another outstanding set of results in view of our non-academically selective entry policy.
?All of our pupils are gaining the basic qualifications that will give them the best possible start in life ? our most able getting top grades and those less academically minded are getting the passes that they need to proceed to the sixth form,? he said.
?Improving the proportion of pupils gaining A and A* has been one of our aims for the past two years, so it is pleasing that we are beginning to see significant signs of progress in this area.
?In a school that is a broad church academically, it is encouraging that our pupils have attained a good number of passes and grades. It is a considerable achievement for almost three-quarters of the year group to get eight or more passes at GCSE.?
And Callington College has also achieved impressive results this week. This year, 62% of students achieved five A* to C grades, 2% up on last year. Out of 205 in the year, 80 received A or A* in at least one subject with 24 students gaining five or more with Stoke Climsland?s Gregg Tysall achieving seven A* and 5 As.
Headteacher Steve Kenning said: ?We have again broken our own records ? what is most pleasing is we are improving on academic excellence whilst providing a much wider education, delivering essential skills and a vast range of opportunities.
?The future looks very bright!?
