LONDON may be hosting the 2012 Olympics, but Dartmoor will be full of the Olympic spirit during a new Olympic-style challenge in early April.
Dartmoor will be host to challenge events showcasing the wide variety of things to see and do in the spectacular landscape during Active Dartmoor Week from March 31 to April 8.
From the launch day at the National Trust's Castle Drogo on March 31, there will be all manner of activities from aerial obstacle courses, biking, horse riding challenges and endurance events, to pony treks, guided walks, dancing, and a bake-off.
The event is being organised by the official tourism organisation for Dartmoor, the Dartmoor Partnership, as part of its Active Dartmoor project. It is working alongside the Dartmoor National Park Authority, the Duchy of Cornwall and local businesses to provide the week-long programme, which is planned to become an annual event.
Adventure Okehampton will be getting involved with the Big Oke Abseil on Saturday April 7. Brave souls can test their head for heights by lowering themselves more than a hundred feet to the ground from Meldon Viaduct to the River Okement. Groups can come along and raise money for charity, and for every person who abseils, Adventure Okehampton will make a donation to the Dartmoor Rescue Group.
