TAVISTOCK depends on visitors to the town, and a favourable impression of the town and its services will bring them back again. Recently, a visitor had the temerity to point out that the square was dull and colourless. She was put in her place by some councillors who felt that non-ratepayers had no right to make any criticism of the town. As Cllr Garton points out in the Times (December 29) the square with its historic backdrop forms its rightful place as the centre for the community. As a resident and ratepayer I support the comments of the lady visitor. There is a need for colour in the square, and as a start I suggest a continuation of the posts and hanging baskets which are around the Guildhall Car Park. The frontage to the town hall I leave to others better qualified than myself, but if the budget is limited, priority should go to the square. Vandalism has been mentioned as a deterrent to development of the square. I look with envy on some of the beautiful squares of Italy and France and wonder why respect for public places should be absent in Tavistock. Peter Boyce 7 Roland Bailey Gardens Tavistock
