THE 2010/11 league season in the Okehampton and district Table Tennis League came to a close with the completion of a few outstanding matches writes Nick Jackson.
In division one, Academy A secured a 10-0 win over Anchorage B who have found the going tough following their promotion from division two last year.
Academy A scores were Tom Pengelly (3), Tom Pearce (3), Ben Hill (3). Anchorage B scores were Dave Wilson (0), John Watson (0), Jenny Gilbert (0). Academy A also won the doubles and secured a bonus point.
Anchorage A took on Okehampton A who were in with an outside chance of a joint second spot. However, they only managed a 7-3 win and had to settle for third place. Barry Denner scored another fine maximum for the Oke side and the Anchorage players all managed to win one singles each. In a close doubles Martin Fowler and Colin Brooker just lost out 9-11 in the fifth set to Barry Denner and Tony Howick.
Anchorage A scores were Martin Fowler (1), Colin Brooker (1), Bob Vella (1). Okehampton A scores were Barry Denner (3), Barry Vaughan (1), Tony Howick (2).
In another game Anchorage A had a walkover against Bridestowe.
Congratulations go to The Young Ones team (George Haskell, Edward Haskell, Andy Moppett and Shawn Haskell) this years division one champions. Tavistock A (Fred Phillips, Roger Bowkett and Peter Hicks) were the runners up.
In division two, Moretonhampstead secured a 6-4 win over Okehampton Young Ones B. Harry Bryant did well to win two singles and was ably supported by Kieran Coyle and debutant Ebby Vallance who both won one singles each.
Moretonhampstead's scores were Ken Underhill (3), Brian Skilton (2), Richard Underhill (0). Oke Young Ones B scores were Harry Bryant (2), Kieran Coyle (1), Ebby Vallance (1). Moreton's Ken and Brian also won the doubles against Harry and Ebby to win the match.
Oke Young Ones B later took on Okehampton B who ran out 8-2 winners. Both Harry Bryant and Kieran Coyle took a singles each and Harry and Kieran were unfortunate to lose the doubles to Maureen Venton and Dick Randell 8-11 in the fifth set.
Oke Young Ones B scores were Harry Bryant (1), Kieran Coyle (1), Ebby Vallance (0). Oke B scores were Maureen Venton (2), Dick Randell (3), John Howick (2). The Oke Young Ones B players deserve a mention as they entered the league for the first time. They are fast becoming a force to be reckoned with and with such talent coming through the future in the table tennis league looks bright.
Congratulations go to the North Wyke team (Jill Dilley, Paulo Dumont, David Scholefield and Steve Granger) this years division two champions. Milton Abbot (Michael Blatchford, Ian Osborne, Mark Cousins, Theo Cousins and Tim Westcott) were the runners up.
The Pretoria Handicap knockout competition will now take place.
