THE earth has literally been moving down at the Clinton Church of England Primary School in Merton to make way for a new environmental area.

Impressive plans for the school grounds include a wildlife and play area, a quiet infant area, an organic garden and outdoor classrooms for use in fine weather.

The scheme was first conceived back in 1992 by teacher Jeff Adams who said: 'We are very lucky to have relatively large school grounds but they consisted of areas of tarmac and fairly baron land.

'We thought it would be a wonderful project to transform some of the grounds into different environmental areas which would not only improve the school's surroundings but also provide a valuable education source.'

Earthmoving equipment and drivers have been supplied by WBB Devon Clays for phase one of the work which is the wildlife and play area.

The clay company has also donated clay to line a large pond which will form one of the central features.

The next phase will involve planting up the new areas.

In the longer term the school is also looking at implementing water and energy saving projects.

Mr Adams said: 'It is wonderful to see work on our plans now underway and we are immensely grateful to everyone who has provided us with assistance, especially all the parents and local companies such as WBB Devon Clays and Victoria Sawmills.

'We are all very excited about the project.

'It is a real team effort and a great example of a small community working together.'
