OVER the last few months you have reported on the parking problems at Tavistock and Callington. Residents have difficulty parking near their homes and parking fees keep on increasing. Additional house building will increase the pressure on town centres. It does not need consultants to show where the problems are. Each new yellow line and parking charge increase displaces vehicles onto residential streets. Even on some Fridays there are spaces in Tavistock?s car parks. Commuters must work and park near the town, filling spaces for the day. This leaves less room for shoppers and other visitors. I visit Tavistock at least once a week and have not used a car park since the charges were increased from 60p. I am not alone. Sometimes I will take a bus but when Tavistock is congested, sitting in Plymouth Road in traffic for ten or more minutes loses its attraction. A fundamental approach is needed to the whole problem. Tavistock can accommodate hundreds of people as we see on Goose Fair day and Dickensian Evening. Many towns have park and ride schemes at reasonable rates but others use it as a revenue-raising device. Some charge for central parking with free parking a short distance from the town centre. Unless an overall review is instigated with clear objectives on all aspects affecting parking, traffic restrictions and access together with the aim of keeping towns attractive and vibrant the situation can only deteriorate to the detriment of all concerned.
