ONCE again the idea of a new supermarket rears its ugly head (Times, November 15). Why do they still keep on trying?

Surely it would be more sensible for Tavistock Town Council to reduce the business rates, so as to attract more retailers into the centre of the town?  We have so many empty shops, and this surely must give a very bad impression to visitors.

I don't believe that we do need another supermarket, anyway, Morrisons does have competition, from Lidl!

I FIND it unfortunate that a badly needed DIY store cannot be found for the former Focus site.

However, we are constantly being told that another supermarket is what is wanted as an alternative to Morrisons.

I find it strange that I have never heard Lidl once being mentioned. I and many people I have spoken to agree that this store has an excellent range of foods, etc, at reasonable prices — the staff are polite and helpful and many Lidl products have won awards.

Is it that people who are also anxious to have another supermarket think a Tesco is the answer? I sincerely hope not!

I FIND the contents of your front page article last week just too incredible for words. To suggest there is room for a fifth supermarket in this town, and no room at all for a DIY store just doesn't make sense at all.

A DIY store has a captive market of around 20,000 adults, and since the demise of Focus, there is not one supplier of these goods within a 25-mile round journey in any direction. As a potentional market you can also add over 250 small businesses which also used to frequent Focus stores.

Tavistock is crying out for a tools, electrical, garden centre supplier — all the areas where Focus made excellent profits.
