WITH dog bins costing £200 a time, town councillors in Tavistock have decided against installing any in the town centre.

Councillors were informed at a properties meeting last week that a member of the public had requested dog bins in the town centre — but that West Devon Borough Council had refused to install them.

Town councillors said that they did not see a great need in that location and were not prepared to pay £200 for each bin, when dog bins were the responsibility of the borough council. There was also a charge of £1.50 each time a bin was emptied.

Cllr Debo Sellis said it was very rare that she took her dog into the town centre and it was really the responsibility of dog owners to take a bag with them to pick up after their pet.

She said the cost of the bins and the safe disposal of the contents would have a knock-on effect on the precept.

Members have also been asked in the past for dog bins at the access to Whitchurch Down.

Cllr Sellis was critical of people who parked on the moor and sat in their cars while their dogs went for a run.

'Bins will not stop these people,' she said.
