A GREAT success ? that was the verdict following Hatherleigh Carnival last weekend, an event that saw crowds roll into the town to watch the entertainment. Despite a delay in the carnival procession, no-one?s spirits were dampened and everyone on the roadside still enjoyed a fantastic display. Carnival press secretary Cindy Squire said organisers wanted to apologise to spectators and the participants alike for the hold-up which was beyond their control and thanked them for their patience. A mechanical fault with the trailer of the Hatherleigh Youth Club float meant the procession set off later than scheduled. This also meant the second of the two flaming tar barrel runs wasn?t completed until almost 10pm on Saturday. However, despite the delay, everyone remained in carnival mood and the event proved to be a great success. Cindy said there had been ?fantastic crowds? at this year?s carnival, with great excitement across the faces of those gathered to enjoy the spectacle of the colourful tableaux. Cindy also wished to say a special thank you to the samba band from Holsworthy who played in the square while the tar barrels were being prepared for the evening run, keeping everyone wonderfully entertained. Earlier on, the afternoon procession from Claremont had been well supported, particularly as the carnival committee agreed as a gesture of goodwill to give all the entrants in the fancy dress competition in the afternoon the sum of £5.
