POLICE say bowlers had a lucky escape after no-one was injured when a weapon appeared to have been fired from a crossbow onto the bowling green in Okehampton?s Simmons Park. At around 8pm, on Tuesday, August 29, bowlers had their game interrupted when a small but sharp arrow-like object landed vertically on the green, embedding itself about two inches into the ground. PC Gary Kellock said: ?With so many people in the vicinity of the green, it could easily have injured or killed somebody. ?I would like to remind the public, it is an offence for anyone under the age of 17 to possess a crossbow in public.? PC Kellock said that as the object had landed vertically it was possible it could have been fired up into the air from a very long distance away. ?If it was an accident, then it could easily have had very dangerous results,? he said, ?If it was deliberate and you injured somebody, you would be looking at the most serious charges.? PC Kellcok said he did not believe the item had been fired from a full-hunting device, but had most likely been launched by a youth who had got their hands on an imitation crossbow of some kind. He asked anyone who recognised the description of the weapon or had any information about how it might have come to have been fired onto the bowling green, to contact Okehampton Police Station on 08452 777444.
