A ROAD crash involving a bus, minibus and three cars brought traffic chaos to Tavistock at the end of the school day on Monday.

The accident happened at about 3.30pm outside the British Telecom building next to Tavistock Primary School.

A road ambulance, Devon Air Ambulance and the police were called to the scene and one car driver was airlifted to Derriford Hospital. No-one was seriously hurt in the incident.

PC Stewart Pearce of Tavistock Police said: 'It couldn't have happened at a worse time — it could have been very serious, with children involved.'

The bus was carrying school students at the time. PC Pearce said no-one on the bus was hurt and the youngsters were taken away to a safe area while alternative transport arrangements were made.

The road was blocked for several hours, causing long tail-backs into Tavistock on the A386.

The First National bus was eventually towed away at around 5.30pm.
