IT could be many months, if not years, before Tavistock?s war memorial is moved to a new position in the parish churchyard, town councillors warned last week.
The council is currently investigating the proposed relocation, after a public consultation revealed most residents would like to see the memorial moved from the Guildhall car park to the churchyard.
Exeter Archaeology has already carried out some survey work on the proposed site ? the next stage will cost the council around £3,610.
Cllr Ted Sherrell, at last week?s meeting of the council?s properties committee, said he was ?somewhat concerned? about the ongoing financial burden of moving the memorial, which is the responsibility of the town council.
Cllr Sherrell said: ?We deal, as a local authority, with priorities and there is no way this could be high on the priority list.
?I think we should flag up that we should happily move towards this in the future, but it?s going to be a long process.?
Cllr Ann Johnson questioned how long current quotes for work would be maintained and Cllr Peter Jones asked if grants were available to help financially.
Town clerk Roger Howard said grants were available although they were more and more difficult to obtain. The council would have to have a fully costed project plan before any grant application could be made.
The committee agreed to make further exploratory fieldwork for the removal of the war memorial a budget consideration for the coming year.
