A FAMILY-run building firm based in Throwleigh has scooped a major regional award.

Character Builders won the regional final of the Federation of Master Builders' builder of the year competition. The company is run by the four Diffey brothers — Sam, Tom, Simeon and Matthew — all of whom are ex-students of Okehampton College. The firm specialises in period property maintenance and has a portfolio which includes work on traditional Devon long houses, barn conversions, and even churches.

One of the brothers, Simeon, said: 'It was an honour to be recognised for our work at such a high level. We are humbled by the accolade of being regional builder of the year, and have our fingers crossed for the national final.' The final takes place in London in March.

The builders were entered for the award by their clients for a renovation project on a grade two listed building in Dunsford. The project involved specialist skills and techniques, including the use of cob, lime products and timber framing.
