THE concerns expressed by Mr Webster and others (Letters, October 20) about the street parking in Ford Street (between Chapel Street and Spring Hill) and other locations around Tavistock have already been noted. Evidence to address safety concerns has been gathered by Devon County Council and the Police. Action is in hand. There are road safety concerns in relation to the obstruction caused by inappropriately parked vehicles along Ford Street and from reports of drivers overriding the footway to avoid oncoming vehicles in the road. Ford Street forms part of a safer walking route to the county primary school and community college. As a consequence, proposals to improve the management of street parking are currently being drawn up and are anticipated to be advertised within the next few weeks. Once the statutory consultation period is over, assuming there are no objections which will hold it up, the new safer proposals will be a reality after that. The county council and the police cannot move faster than the statutory process will allow. Your readers will be pleased to know that as part of the planning process, Devon County Council has also been very proactive in seeking legal conditions and agreements with the developer of The Manor site in Tavistock to promote safer walking routes from the north side of the town to the primary school and college. Under a section 106 legal agreement, a mini-roundabout is to be constructed at the junction of Ford Street with Spring Hill and West Street with associated traffic islands and build-outs to aid pedestrian movements and reduce traffic speed. A new short section of footway will also be constructed in Spring Hill to provide a safer walking route to Ford Street. This initiative aims to improve road safety and further encourage a walking culture and less reliance on the car to access schools and local shopping facilities and will be progressed at the developer?s expense. Readers can be re-assured that the traffic situation in Tavistock is constantly monitored by Devon County Council and the Police. Evidence is always being gathered, and the views of your correspondents like Mr Webster are always listened to. I am always more than happy to receive evidence direct. Roy Connelly Devon County Councillor Tavistock Division
