A BIG thank you was given to the guides of Mary Tavy last week, after they raised a total of £1,100 for a British Red Cross service that helps people with disfigurements. The guides raised the money by serving cream teas at last year's Tavistock Balloon Festival and Day at the Races. At a Camouflage Talk in Mary Tavy Village Hall last Tuesday, Carole Ann Pitfield, a Red Cross co-ordinator, thanked the guides personally for their hard work. She showed the guides the difference their money will make to people with vitiligo, lupus, birthmarks or scarring by demonstrating specialist creams and before and after pictures. Mrs Pitfield said: 'We treat many young people, often they come to us before a special occasion such as a school prom and are amazed when we teach them how they can successfully cover disfigurements,' Anne Hine, a Red Cross volunteer, said: 'It's great to be able to thank people in person. 'We also want to thank both the Lions and Round Table, who supported us so brilliantly with equipment and help on the day. We can always rely on them to come up trumps.'
