OKEHAMPTON College is gearing up to the end of the year — and the end of a 17-year era as principal Philip Herriman prepares to leave.

Mr Herriman announced his intention to leave the college in May — the new principal will be Christopher Powell, 46, who is vice-principal of John Kitto Community College in Plymouth.

Mr Herriman said he was 'delighted' to be leaving the school at such a good time, with improving exam results and after successful Ofsted inspections.

'It's been quite a term though,' he said, referring to the floods suffered by the school last month.

'We've still got the dehumidifiers going.'

Mr Herriman thanked all the staff and students for their hard work and support this term.

'I shall be sorry to go but it's at a good time,' he said.

Mr Herriman is to be an external advisor with the Cambridge Education Association, giving advice to governing bodies — he will also act as a threshold assessor.
