A CONDEMNED children?s play area in Callington, which has suffered repeated acts of vandalism, is set to get a revamp. The toddlers? playground at Rosemullion Gardens has been in a downward spiral over the past couple of years and has been described as looking like ?Colditz?. A meeting is being held with residents of the estate tomorrow (Friday) between 5pm and 7pm to discuss exciting plans for the play area. The plans are being led by Callington Town Council, which conducted a survey of 100 residents to find out what they wanted on the site. An application is now going forward to the Lottery ?Awards for All? for an £18,000 scheme which will include swings, roundabout, murals on the walls, benches and other colourful equipment. The council?s outside services committee chairman Cllr Denise Winfindale said she was keeping her fingers crossed: ?It?s a lot of money but we hope we will be successful because the area is now in such a state and children?s playgrounds in large residential areas are very important. ?The space is now all but shut down ? we have one swing in there but everything else had to go because it has been abused. We hope that once everything is bright and new the vandalism will stop. ?When places look a bit sad they tend to be targets for vandalism because no-one appears to care about them. But the skateboard park and our town murals have been looked after so we hope this new play area will be.? As its contribution to the project the town council has removed all the existing equipment and safety surfaces and will prepare the ground for the new surface to go down. Council workmen have also treated the walls so they can be painted and improved security by the gate. If the grant application is successful the town council has agreed to maintain the play area indefinitely. As many parents and children as people who live in the area of Rosemullion Gardens are being advised to attend the meeting tomorrow.
