A SECOND appeal has been made to address the situation over the 'dangerous' courtesy crossings in Tavistock after more people have fallen victim to their uneven surfaces.

The urgent appeal comes after a woman fell on a cobbled crossing on July 15 at the beginning of Drake Road and spent the day in hospital injured.

Tavistock resident Sandra Dineley-Jones said she was told by her doctors that she must recuperate for six to eight weeks to allow her injuries to heal, following the incident.

Sandra's fall comes just a few weeks after a call was made by two Tavistock town councillors, Cllr Jeff Moody and Cllr John Sheldon, to address the damaged and dangerous crossings after two serious accidents occurred on the courtesy crossing between the town hall and St Eustachius' Church — approximately 25 metres from where Sandra fell.

Sandra, 70, said: 'On Wednesday, July 15 at approximately 12.50pm I was unfortunate to be another victim of the Tavistock cobbles. I tripped over between the two banks at the bottom of Drake Road — my injuries could take six to eight weeks to heal.

'When walking across any of those crossings you are not looking where you are going, you are looking at the traffic. I'm an active 70-year-old and I was with my husband, walking across the road. I was even holding on to his arm and I still managed to trip and fall.

'I understand that around ten to 12 people have fallen on the cobbled areas, indeed an elderly gentleman was reported to have fallen at the same place as me later that afternoon.

'It's not good enough that the county council isn't taking any notice — I want to highlight the dangers of the cobbles as they need to be sorted once and for all.'

Cllr Moody, who has been active in imploring Devon County Council to repair all courtesy crossings in Tavistock, said that he believed in the last few weeks, approximately five people, including Sandra, have fallen on the uneven surfaces.

He said:?'I am truly appalled that, in spite of Devon County Council being fully aware of the seriousness of this issue, nothing is being done.

'Unsuspecting pede-strians are continuing to be injured on an alarmingly regular basis. I simply am at a loss as to why these crossings aren't being made safe as a matter of urgency.'

Cllr Sheldon told the Times: 'There is a hump on the crossing which is catching people out and these matters need to be addressed and all we can do is look to Devon County Council to address the issue.'

A Devon County Council spokesman said: 'We are monitoring the crossing points in Drake Road, which have become uneven due to heavy traffic, but they are not currently a safety defect.

'We are liaising regularly with local member, Cllr Debo Sellis, to address these issues and we are in the process of designing new crossing points.

'Unfortunately, there's no quick fix as we have to consider a number of factors, such as skid resistance and durability of the material.

'When the crossing points can be reconstructed, the road will have to be closed which will cause some disruption.'
