OKEHAMPTON Golf Club will reflect on its wonderful past this month with an archive exhibition, as the latest part of its centenary year celebrations.
The club has shared a wonderful collection of fascinating photographs with the Times, documenting the early history of the club, founded in 1913.
These photos, along with a number of others, original minute books and club memorabilia will be on show at the club house from March 28 to April 8.
The original nine hole golf course was laid out by John Henry 'JH' Taylor, the celebrated professional golfer and course architect born in Devon.
Taylor won the Open Championship five times. The course was opened in July 1913 by Okehampton's greatest benefactor, Sydney Simmons.
In 1921 it was decided to extend the course to 18 holes.
This work was supervised by Mr E P Burd, then honorary secretary, the benefit of whose long experience of golf and golf courses was felt during this period of change.
The full course was formally opened by former Open champions J H Taylor and Alex Herd on May 9, 1923.
The club is planning a series of special events throughout the year to commemorate the occasion, the centrepiece being the centenary festival week from July 13 to July 19.
The club house will be open for the exhibition during club hours, for more information call 01837 52113.
