A COMMUNITY work day, snowed off a fortnight ago, will take place at the new Gateway Garden in Okehampton this Saturday.

Everyone is welcome to join the Growing Our Future team and local residents, both young and old, to continue clearing and tidying the new garden, on the corner of Crediton Road, Northfield Road and East Street.

The Growing our Future project is leading the scheme, which has been initiated by young members of the community.

The project aims to inspire and encourage others to be fully involved in positively contributing to Okehampton's green spaces.

Beth Hamer, of Growing our Future, said: 'There have been many recent developments, please join us to discuss what may eventually be sited in the Gateway Garden, your input is very important to us.

'There are some exciting plans for the new garden, the most important of which is to fully involve the community of Okehampton in the design of whatever may be located on this site.'

Beth said the project was working with students from Okehampton College and community groups throughout the town to launch a community participation design process.

'We hope that the process of clearing the site to the final installation of a community-initiated art work will take less than three months.

'Through involving the local community we hope that whatever the final outcome of the work will be, it will be owned, respected and loved by the passers by and utilisers of this space.'

Anyone who would like to join the work day can contact Dominie Hooper at Growing Our Future on 07903 121146 or e-mail [email protected]">[email protected]

Volunteers are advised to bring outdoor clothing, gardening gloves, some food to share and a spade, if available, and should feel free to drop in for as long or as little as they wish.
