CHILDREN from Tavistock Primary School have benefited from a £5,000 donation by a local children's charity.

The Mary Budding Trust, which is based in West Devon, presented the school with the donation to create two sensory rooms, one of which has already been completed.

The trust raises money and gives grants to help children with special needs, and their families.

Chairman of the trust, former Tavistock Primary School headteacher Tony Wates, said: 'The Mary Budding Trust put in £5,000 to buy the equipment to help create two rooms, which will enable the children to interact with the equipment.

'The room really is an exciting place — even the toys light up.'

The sensory room is equipped with visual, tactile and auditory equipment to provide an environment to help children concentrate — some of this equipment is versatile and can be used outside the room.

Jackie Freedman, learning development co-ordinator at the school, said: 'These resources are particularly beneficial to the children who attend the resource base for pupils with complex communication and interaction difficulties.

'The fact that the room is painted black also provides a space to relax, which offers some pupils a peaceful sanctuary within a multi sensory environment.'

The school is a fully inclusive primary school and the sensory room is also used by many children to meet their individual needs.
