COMPOST will be to the fore at Tavistock Farmers' Market this Saturday where those who want to recycle household waste will find compost bins on sale at a discount price.
The bins are on sale to celebrate National Compost Awareness week.
Garden trimmings, green kitchen waste and grass cuttings are all suitable for compost. Up to a third of household waste could be composted and the finished material can improve any soil ensuring bigger, healthier plants.
West Devon Borough Council will be giving away an illustrated book, entitled 'Backyard Composting', free of charge with every bin sold. The first few people to purchase a bin from the market, will also receive a free packet of seeds.
Peter Kent of Tavistock and District Conservation Project will be on hand at Tavistock's bi-monthly farmers' market this Saturday, for further advice on how to start your own composting.
The council is supporting the initiative with proceeds from the sale of the bins directly benefiting local groups and the environment. Jill Skelton, from West Devon Borough Council's client services, said: 'Home composting is a very effective way of re-using materials that would otherwise have to be disposed of.'
