THE competition to provide a public work of art to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the granting of Tavistock?s market charter was launched in the town library last week. Tavistock mayor Cllr Jenny Metcalf officially opened the competition launch and viewed the four very different submissions by local artists ? their work will be on display in the library foyer until March 11. The winning work of art will be chosen by the public, who can vote for their favourite piece by using special voting slips available in the library. Cllr Metcalf said she was impressed by the high standard and diversity of the submissions and looked forward to seeing which work would win. She said: ?It is very important that Tavistock, as the premier market town in England for the last 900 years, has a lasting reminder of the occasion and even more important, that it will be chosen by the community.? Moira Andrews, events co-ordinator of the charter group organising this year?s celebrations, said: ?I hope everyone will come and see the display and make their choice. ?It is their charter, their town and their vote. All the artists have worked so hard and it will be so very difficult to choose ? they are all winners.? The artists are Rosie Fierek, Karen and Gordon Green, Richard and Charlotte Marlow and Maggie Squire. Cllr Iain Andrews, chairman of the charter group, said Rosie?s submission was a ceramic ?tree of life? which included a detailed history of Tavistock from pre-charter market times until the present day. Karen and Gordon Green?s submission was a weather vane, based upon a goose girl, which would be placed on top of the town?s museum. Richard and Charlotte Marlow?s submission was a bronze sculpture based on a goose, which would either be free-standing or a bas-relief which would be erected on the wall of Court Gate. And Maggie Squire, whose colourful banner made from plastic shopping bags decorated the town hall a few years ago, has entered a submission to be erected in the pannier market, reflecting shopping trends throughout time. Cllr Andrews said: ?The submissions are all great in their own way, we thought they were all really super.?
