OKEHAMPTON Carnival Committee has continued its good work by donating vital funds to a series of different organisations. At their recent annual meeting, held in the council chamber at the town hall, the carnival committee presented a cheque to the FORCE cancer charity. The committee also gave money to the scouts, Dartmoor Search and Rescue and the Okehampton Christmas lights fund. At the meeting the committee had a change of chairman when Stan Stormont, who has held the post for the last five years, retired. Elaine Gord, the previous vice-chair, has now taken up the role. Mr Stormont said he had enjoyed his term of office and wished the new chair all the best for the future. The committee said they were pleased with the takings from last year's carnival. The takings remained similar to previous years, despite the carnival being held on the same night of the Rugby World Cup final. This year's carnival will be held on Saturday October 18 with the committee intending to hold a carnival on the third Saturday in October every year, in line with tradition.
