Okehampton RFC Seconds 60
Bude Seconds 0
OKEHAMPTON Seconds continued their perfect start to the season with a 60 point demolition job on Bude Seconds at a bright and sunny Oaklands Park.
In what was arguably their best performance of the year to date and, against a good side, the match was over as a contest well before half-time and the home side continued to apply the pressure right up to the final whistle.
Okehampton began the match with the elements in their favour and went 5-0 up within the first five minutes with a try that was to tell the story of the game.
The Bude forwards took the ball into contact where it was unceremoniously turned over. Okehampton quickly tied in a number of the Bude pack before swiftly moving the ball wide to Lee Carey on the wing who gleefully accepted a one on one to score in the corner from 30 metres.
However, the next five to ten minutes proved to be rather frustrating for the Okes as a combination of the streetwise visiting pack and a high penalty count against them meant that no further scoring opportunities were created.
After 20 minutes a nice handling move, instigated by veteran centre Mark Curtis, saw the Okes' skipper Simon Griffiths on hand to cross under the posts. Buzz Brimacombe's conversion was a formality to give the home side a 12-0 lead.
A period of concerted forward pressure on the Bude line resulted in a five metre scrum being awarded to Okehampton.
A powerful surge by the hosts' pack which was well-controlled by number eight Simon Bennett enabled him to gather the ball to cross for the third try — duly converted by Brimacombe.
The next try was the try of the match. Almost directly from the restart a flowing move involving backs and forwards alike saw the ball moved through perhaps a dozen pairs of hands before prop Steve Penna took the scoring pass.
Full-back David Wills completed the first-half scoring with another try that gave Okehampton an interval lead of 29-0.
If the visitors had hoped that the second period would provide respite from the onslaught those hopes were dashed shortly after the restart.
Despite playing up the slope and into the quickly setting sun Okehampton carried on from where they left off in the first half.
Two further tries by the impressive Lee Carey, on his first game back after injury, two from Adam Curtis and one from Buzz Brimacombe who also added three further conversions gave a final score of 60-0.
Credit must go to the North Cornwall visitors who never gave up.
