THE vital work of carers came under the spotlight as Tavistock Carers? Group supported this year?s National Carers? Week. The theme of the week was ?In Sickness and In Health? to show people who look after a sick or disabled friend, partner or relative, there are services available to them, and to highlight the effects caring can have on carers? own health and well-being. Among the high-profile faces supporting the event nationally was GMTV presenter, Fiona Phillips, who said: ?I?m proud to be supporting this year?s carers? week. I know from personal experience, with my chronically ill mum, just how demanding such a role can be. ?Yet carers receive little, if any, recognition for the truly invaluable work they do.? The Tavistock group manned a terracotta and blue information stall in the Tavistock Pannier Market on June 13. Claire Webber, community care worker for Tavistock Social Services, said: ?We welcomed everyone in the local community to the event, especially if they have caring responsibilities themselves. ?Many carers find it useful to meet people who are in a similar situation.? Carers? week is a partnership of eight UK-wide charities working together; Carers UK, Counsel and Care, Crossroads Caring for Carers, Help the Aged, Macmillan Cancer Relief, MS Society, Rethink, and The Princess Royal Trust for Carers.
