HAVING read and re-read last week?s town square confusion article, I am writing to take issue with several of the points that you have raised.
The only people who can possibly be ?confused? must be those whose personal ambitions are served by inflaming public opinion for their own interests, or are just voicing sour grapes.
Bedford Square is and I hope always will be available for the public at large, to enjoy a variety of non-commercial events, when those events coincide with council guidelines.
Tamar Area Capri Owners (TACO) booked the square in 2003 in order to give the community a chance to enjoy seeing a number of these vehicles together, in the centre of Tavistock, before they departed on a tour of Dartmoor.
The booking was correctly submitted, met the criteria and a licence was therefore issued for the assembly on the town square. This was before the embargo on cars using the square was proposed by West Devon Borough Council, and so was duly honoured by both councils. Other events of a similar type, submitted after the embargo, have been refused.
Contrary to your article, only 18 cars were parked on Bedford Square and all had vacated by 12.15pm. None were parked across the entrance to the town hall or restricted its access.
Although TACO had a licence to use the whole square until 12.30pm, they were asked to clear the Guildhall end by the organisers of the jazz event.
We complied with this request, even though we were under no obligation to do so; this necessitated parking the cars in an area of the square that would otherwise have been kept clear.
I have also checked with the town clerk, who assures me that TACO complied wholly with their agreed usage of the square on May 2.
All clubs, societies and charities are being smothered by extra costs and paperwork that will in the end deprive the community of their diversity.
TACO as a branch of Capri Club International is covered by public liability insurance to enable it to share its events with members of the public.
In the event the day was a great success and we were delighted with the positive public response to our being in the square. We look forward to organising our run next year, and will, we hope, be able to displaying our cars in a central location again.
Guy Massey
Chairman TACO
