NINE West Devon cadets have taken part in a path clearing exercise in Sticklepath as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards scheme.

Supported by Dartmoor ranger Pete Rich and Sgt (ATC) Reynolds, the team cleared a path in the Skaigh valley on September 9. The cadets need to complete a voluntary phase to claim their awards, and undertook the clearing work to get them one step closer to claiming their prizes.

The group spent five hours armed with shovels, picks and a variety of tools to clear and widen the paths on the upper southern slopes of the valley.

If anyone is interested in completing their Duke of Edinburgh Award or joining the cadets, they are more than welcome to attend a cadet meeting on Monday nights at 7pm at the Railway Sidings off Station Road.

As well as learning about the Royal Air Force, cadets get practical training in moor walking, navigation, shooting, first aid, kayaking, climbing and get involved in gliding and flying activities.

They will also get the chance to walk in the Ten Tors challenge. The minimum age being 13 years of age to join the cadets.
