A TAVISTOCK woman and her brother have said a big thank you to the a Derriford Hospital unit for the care its staff gave to their father by presenting it with a bumper cheque of £2,400. Hilary Palmer, 45, and her brother Peter, 38, raised the money in December 2004 by a superb Christmas light display at the family's former home in Roland Bailey Gardens in Tavistock. Their father, John, who had to have kidney dialysis four times a day at home, died shortly after in January 2005 at the age of 72 from a heart attack. Mr Palmer was cared for by the hospital's continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) unit and his son and daughter wanted to donate a piece of medical equipment as a special thank you. The money has been used to buy an electrocardiogram (ECG) machine. Hilary told the Times: 'The CAPD were absolutely brilliant, especially Sister Leigh Hopwood, who could not do enough for him and this is our way of paying the unit back.' Sister Hopwood said: 'On behalf of staff and patients, I would like to thank Hilary and Peter for their donation, which has allowed us to buy a state of the art piece of equipment for use with our patients.'
